Does my USB-C port support video?
USB-C ports all look the same, but only some send video. The symbol printed next to the port, and what the device is, usually tell you. Two quick questions.
Why USB-C is confusing
USB-C is only the shape of the plug. The same shape can carry charging only, data, video, or all three, depending on the device and the cable. Video over USB-C is usually called DisplayPort Alt Mode, and Thunderbolt ports always include it.
USB-C to HDMI not working?
- The port may not send video. Use the checker above.
- Only one of several ports may do video. Try each one.
- Some adapters with extra ports need their own power. Plug in the charger.
- For a monitor with a USB-C input, a basic charging cable often carries no video. Use one that lists video or 4K support.
- Set the TV or monitor to the input you plugged into.
