How to connect an old stereo to a smart TV

Most smart TVs output sound digitally over optical, and older stereos only take analog RCA. A small powered optical-to-RCA converter (DAC) bridges them. Set the TV’s audio output to PCM.

Why this works

Optical audio (TOSLINK) is digital and RCA stereo audio is analog. A plain cable can’t bridge that. A powered Digital to analog audio converter (DAC) translates the signal.

Before you buy

Set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM or Stereo, or the DAC may stay silent.

Good to know

Many "HDMI only" TVs still have a small AV input hidden on the side. Press Input/Source on the remote and look for AV or Composite.
