How to connect a laptop to a VGA monitor
Use an HDMI to VGA adapter from the laptop’s HDMI port to the monitor’s VGA cable. It must say HDMI to VGA; VGA to HDMI is a different product. VGA carries no sound, so audio stays on the laptop.

Why this works
HDMI is digital and VGA is analog. A plain cable can’t bridge that. A powered HDMI to VGA adapter translates the signal.
Before you buy
- Sound is not carried by VGA. Models with a 3.5 mm audio out can feed speakers.
- VGA carries picture only. Plan a separate audio connection if you need sound from speakers.
