How to connect a laptop to an older VGA projector
Use a small HDMI-to-VGA adapter, or a USB-C-to-VGA adapter if your laptop only has USB-C. VGA carries no sound, so plan separate speakers if the presentation has audio.

Why this works
HDMI is digital and VGA is analog. A plain cable can’t bridge that. A powered HDMI to VGA adapter translates the signal.
Before you buy
- Direction matters. You need HDMI in and VGA out. The VGA to HDMI converter looks almost identical but works the other way. Check that the box says “HDMI to VGA (active converter)”.
- Sound is not carried by VGA. Models with a 3.5 mm audio out can feed speakers.
- VGA carries picture only. Plan a separate audio connection if you need sound from speakers.
